New customer protections for energy customers

A proposal to better protect customers against running up large debts to their power company and being disconnected has been released for public comment by the state’s energy regulator.
The Essential Services Commission draft decision has proposed changes to the Energy Retail Code aimed at providing new protections for customers who are at risk of falling into debt and being disconnected.
The proposal would require energy retailers to ensure customers receive timely and meaningful help by establishing new minimum standards for the assistance that customers will receive.
The new minimum standards include offering a range of flexible payment arrangements as well as help with lowering energy costs and accessing support services.
A number of forums are being held with key stakeholders including energy retailers and consumer advocate groups are being held over the next six weeks with a public forum to be held on the 1 June, 2017.
Submissions should be sent in writing by 5pm on 16 June 201.
