Powershop paid $300,000 in penalties after alleged contravention of Victoria's Energy Industry Act relating to treating renewable energy customers differently to non-renewable energy customers.
Powershop penalty notices 2021 (solar discrimination)
Powershop has paid $300,000 after we issued 15 penalty notices on 26 March 2021. The amount payable for each penalty notice was $20,000.
In these notices, we alleged that Powershop, under the brand Kogan Energy, failed to comply with their obligations between 10 September 2019 and 7 April 2020 by not offering to sell electricity to renewable energy customers at the same tariffs and on the same terms and conditions that it offered to non-renewable energy customers.
Treating renewable energy customers differently to non-renewable energy customers is a contravention of Victoria’s Electricity Industry Act 2000.
