How we make VEU decisions
We have developed a decision making framework which is designed to support a culture of good decision making practices. This framework is underpinned by our commitment to:
- being transparent, accountable and keeping our stakeholders informed about decision-making
- creating the right culture, systems and processes to support good decision-making.
Objective
The objectives of the framework are:
- to create the right culture and systems to empower our people to make good decisions
- to facilitate the making of decisions that are:
- independent, evidence based, consistent, balanced and proportionate
- in line with our regulatory framework
- to provide transparency about our decisions and their rationale to stakeholders

Internal review of commission decisions
Accredited persons and applicants for accreditation can request that the Essential Services Commission reconsider reviewable decisions through an internal review.
Reviewable decisions include:
- to refuse an application for accreditation or renewal of accreditation
- to grant accreditation in respect of one or more prescribed activities
- to impose conditions on accreditation relating to the prescribed activity or class of prescribed activity that may be undertaken
- to suspend a person's accreditation
- to cancel a person's accreditation
- to disqualify a person from applying for renewal of accreditation for a specified period
- not to register a certificate or multiple certificates.
How to request an internal review of a decision
The commission will notify you of your rights to request an internal review when making a decision.
A request for the commission to review a decision must be made in writing within 30 business days of the commission’s decision, setting out the reasons for the request.
Only one review request can be made for each reviewable decision and the person requesting the review will be invoiced for the applicable fee of $750.

Internal review process
On receiving a request to review a decision, the commission will reconsider the decision and confirm, vary or set aside the decision. We may require additional information or documents from the applicant for internal review or other persons as part of that reconsideration.
We will provide written notice of the outcome of the review to the applicant for internal review within 40 business days after the request to review a decision is received, including the reasons for the decision.
