Essential stories: Maureen from the Victorian Energy Upgrades team
01 February 2023
I'm the Manager of Planning and Development in the Victorian Energy Upgrades division at the commission.
I really believe in the work we do. Knowing that you're directly helping Victorians reduce their energy bills and their carbon emissions as part of the Victorian Government's overall strategy for tackling climate change is so satisfying.
I don't think I've ever worked for an organisation that's provided as much flexibility or as many development opportunities as the commission does. I've been able to improve skills that are highly relevant to my role with the full support of my manager and my colleagues. I can balance my busy role with being a mum. The commission didn't even mind when I took a two-year leave of absence to take up a job in Vanuatu! We're all real people who look out for each other and support each other to reach our goals. You can't beat that.
Outside of work, I absolutely love spending time with my family and yoga. They both always help me draw breath and recentre myself. I've also recently become a keen surfer. I don't know if I'm very good yet but it's a great way to impress people!

The Essential Services Commission is made up of a diverse range of people who bring something unique to our workplace. In 2023, our 'essential stories' series showcases some of our team members and why the work they do here is important to them. Follow us on LinkedIn for regular 'essential stories' updates.
We regulate participants and products in the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program to deliver energy efficiency improvements which are more affordable for consumers, and reduces their long term energy consumption.
